ScholarStem traditionally concluded classes with a Showcase event, a platform for students to demonstrate their achievements. Grand St. envisioned enhancing this event, proposing a joint Discovery Fair. Their idea was to spotlight the projects of all 12 sites at a grand science fair at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. This presented both an opportunity and a challenge: How could we amplify our showcase while emphasizing themes of entrepreneurship and social impact?
The Discovery Fair was a huge success for our students and instructors, the school instructors, and the community as a whole. Engagement with more than just the students we directly work with is an incredible benefit of ending our program with a community event like this. For the students to see their hard work pay off in some amazing experiments and activities, and also see many other interesting projects from other schools and groups was an amazing learning and community building experience.
Students learned about the impact bees have on the environment, and how we can help our ecosystems and protect bees by building them homes to live in!
These students made game controllers with circuit boards and craft materials, then adapted them to make controllers for people with disabilities or different abilities!
Students at Bushwick Hylan showed the VR version of their classroom at the Discovery fair, explaining how tools like this can be used to show how they benefit from their program, and where funding and materials could be used to make their program even better!
